Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
902 AM EDT Wed Apr 9 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
Cool and dry high pressure builds in for today before shifting
offshore tonight. Low pressure then arrives Thursday and Friday,
resulting in moderating temperatures and another period of wet
weather. This new low could linger near the area through at
least the first half of the weekend. High pressure builds in for
the back of the weekend and into next week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
900 AM Update...Temperatures have risen above freezing so the Freeze
Warning has been allowed to expire. Otherwise, no significant
changes to the forecast with the mid morning update.
High pressure currently centered over West Virginia will slide east
off the coast as the day wears on, and the northwest winds will
become westerly and then southwesterly. There may still be a few
gusts up to around 20 mph, but certainly nothing like the 40-45 mph
gusts we saw yesterday. Combined with nearly wall-to-wall sunshine,
and temps nudging just a few degrees higher than yesterday, and
today should feel considerably more pleasant, even if it will remain
on the cool side of normal.
Next system starts to approach from the west tonight, with
increasing clouds and winds becoming southerly. This should hold
temps up, with lows mostly above freezing, but still in the 30s.
Expect any rain to hold off until after dawn.
&&
.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Thursday begins a stretch of some unsettled days. Weak and
decaying low pressure moves into the Great Lakes, with a warm
front lifting through. The surface low will slowly occlude as a
new surface low begins to develop off to the south (which will
eventually bring some more widespread rain later). Lift will be
aided by a shortwave swinging through. All of this will result
in some showers on Thursday, mainly west of Philadelphia, though
any rainfall will be light. Temperatures could be cold enough
in the Poconos to support some flakes at onset, but would expect
a quick changeover to rain as warm-air advection continues.
Outside of showers, clouds increase and it should be a mostly
cloudy to overcast day with temperatures getting into the 50s,
though still a few degrees below normal.
Weak low pressure moves into western New York/southern Ontario
on Thursday Night before occluding on Friday. This will result
in some light rain developing Thursday Night over the area.
There could be a brief break on Friday, but a new surface low
looks to develop over the Carolinas, lifting northward up the
coast through the day on Friday. This will bring another round
of rain through Friday Night as we continue to make inroads on
the ongoing drought. NBM Probability of 1+ inch of rain Thursday
through early Saturday is around 70-80% across the region,
though some embedded heavier rain looks likely to the point some
spots may get as high or even over 2 inches of rain.
Probability of 2+ inches of rain through Saturday hovers around
20-30%, a not insignificant number especially since the highest
probabilities are centered near the I-95 corridor. This could
result in some urban or poor drainage flooding. A Marginal Risk
(1/4) is in place for most of the region for excessive rainfall.
Cannot rule out some rumbles of thunder either, mainly from the
I-95 corridor on east, though no severe weather is anticipated.
The surface low that moves up the coast on Friday night will
meander nearby as an upper level trough over the eastern US
tries to close off. This will result in some showers hanging
around through Saturday.
Temperatures through the end of the week and first half of the
weekend will be in the upper 40s/low to mid 50s for highs and
upper 30s/low to mid 40s for lows.
&&
.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A deep upper level trough crosses the region on Saturday Night,
with an associated surface low slowly pulling away. Drier air
begins to work in on the backside of the low with showers
gradually moving out. Pretty good agreement among guidance in
the positioning and timing of the upper level trough passing.
With the surface low pulling away, Sunday should be mainly dry,
though a few showers are possible near the coast. Temperatures
will be a few degrees below normal with lower heights aloft and
northwest flow ushering in some cooler air, bringing highs in
the 50s.
Upper level ridging begins to work in on Sunday Night, with
high pressure at the surface sliding by to the south into next
week. With heights rising and flow turning more southwesterly,
temperatures quickly moderate for Monday and Tuesday, even going
into above normal territory. Pretty good consensus that highs
likely get into the 70s on Monday and especially Tuesday. A
frontal system could come in sometime on Tuesday, knocking down
temperatures toward more seasonable levels for the middle of
next week. This frontal system could also bring some
precipitation, though low confidence on that as the upper air
pattern solutions diverge beyond Tuesday.
Overnight lows through the long-term look to be in the 40s,
with perhaps some areas up north getting into the upper 30s. The
Frost/Freeze program for spring expands tomorrow to areas south
of I- 78, and temperatures overnight in the long term should be
warm enough to not have any cold weather concerns for
agriculture.
